About Me

I am the founder and creator of the Global Creative Industries program (commenced 2012) at the University of Hong Kong, where I am the acting head and associate professor at the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at the Faculty of Arts. Prior to that, I taught Japanese Studies at the same university for sixteen years.

 

I read my BA at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, graduating with First Class Honors in Anthropology. I continued my studies in Anthropology at St. Antony’s College at Oxford University, where I did my PhD on Social Anthropology. One of my most inspiring undergraduate teachers was Professor Chen Chi-nan, who taught me the importance of understanding others in their cultural context rather than imposing our own cultural conceptions upon them. Another important mentor for me was Professor Marshall Sahlins. He taught me that culture is a species-specific capacity for Homo Sapiens and cannot be reduced to any practical reason.
